Examining our Selection Process – Independent Research

In a September blog post we explored the first step of the patented Super Lawyers selection process, the creation of the candidate pool. Today we are talking about the second step: Independent Research. And don’t forget, we’ll be back next month to culminate this three-part blog series by highlighting the role peer evaluation plays in selection.

From honors and awards to transactions to pro bono work, our research department evaluates each lawyer in the candidate pool based on the following 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. These indicators are not treated equally; some have a higher maximum point value than others.

Indicators2.jpgAt Super Lawyers we do our best to find all the information we can to make an informed decision when it comes to potential selectees. However at times we don’t catch everything…this is where you come in. To increase your visibility to the Super Lawyers research team and ensure you are considered, we encourage you to provide information on each of the above twelve indicators by updating the ABOUT section of your profile at https://my.superlawyers.com/. The ABOUT section has each of the twelve indicators listed for you to add information that you would like us to consider. Information can also be sent to our research staff via sl-research@thomsonreuters.com.

When updating your information be sure to reference these three tips:

  1. Keep it recent – it’s not that we don’t want to hear about that award winning paper from Legal Writing 101 back in 1978. The fact of the matter is we want to learn about things more time sensitive, so it’s a good idea to concentrate on indicators within the last five years.
  2. Be as specific as possible – we understand that many attorneys have confidentiality concerns about identifying specific clients or settlements, so we will accept information that doesn’t name the participants. The guideline we use is that the participants don’t need to be named but instead can be specifically described. An example could be something like this “she represents a Massachusetts-based shipping company with operations across the country.”
  3. Take a comprehensive approach – when submitting information, be sure to familiarize yourself with all 12 indicators. Don’t just focus on one indicator. Provide information in all of the categories that pertain to your practice.
