Examining our Selection Process - Peer Evaluation by Practice Area

Last month we talked about the second step of the patented Super Lawyers selection process, independent research. Today we are back to culminate this blog series by examining the final phase of the process.

The third step of the selection process for each state is peer evaluation by practice area, also known as the "Blue Ribbon Panel" evaluations. The candidates in each practice area with the highest point totals from steps one (creation of the candidate pool) and two (independent research) are asked to serve on the Blue Ribbon Panel via an email from Super Lawyers. The panelists will complete their evaluations on My.SuperLawyers.com where they will be provided a list of candidates from their practice areas to review, rating them on a scale of one to five.

What you need to know about the Blue Ribbon Panel evaluations:

  • Make sure your primary practice area is accurate so your name is being put in front of the right people.
  • For the best chance of an accurate evaluation, we encourage you to provide the most up up-to-date information by visiting the ABOUT section of your My.SuperLawyers.com profile.
  • Panelists cannot evaluate themselves. When reviewing other peers, a panelist's name will not appear on his or her own list. However, it is visible to other panelists.
  • This phase is extremely time-sensitive so we cannot allow any extensions on these evaluations.
  • All evaluations are considered, however, they are considered in the context of the entire selection process. As such, low evaluations alone are unlikely to disqualify an otherwise excellent lawyer and high evaluations alone will not guarantee selection.

The research staff then checks each candidate's standing with the local licensing authority. Each candidate is asked to aver that they have never been subject to disciplinary or criminal proceedings.

Final Internet searches are performed on each candidate to ensure there are no outstanding matters that would reflect adversely on the lawyer. We also contact each lawyer to ensure accuracy of all published information - all selected attorneys are required to verify their practice area and contact information at My.SuperLawyers.com in order to be listed in their state's print publication(s). Only those who data verify will be listed in print.

At Super Lawyers, we take pride in our patented selection process, which produces a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for referring attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel.
