2013 Super Lawyers Advisory Board Retreat: Recap
More Accolades for Super Lawyers' Journalism
(Note: This content is posted on behalf of Heather Walker, Super Lawyers Sr. Director.)
At Super Lawyers, our vision is to provide unparalleled visibility for the attorneys and firms on our list. Just as the business of law is ever-changing, the best marketing solutions for lawyers also evolve. Super Lawyers hosts a variety of focus groups, regional events, sponsorships, trade shows, quarterly webinars and retreats to better understand today's attorney.
Super Lawyers recently completed our 2013 Advisory Board Retreat, held November 13-15 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Attendees included our National Advisory Board (well-known attorneys) and members of our Marketing Board (marketing directors). The group participated in broad sessions and small breakouts designed to generate ideas that will grow our businesses together.
While the weather and the location were truly exceptional, the best part was the valuable insights we received on how to:
- Expand our print distribution nationally and regionally
- Make our lists even more relevant to attorneys and consumers
- Deliver online marketing solutions that drive business development for top law firms
A special thanks to our attendees. The group's engagement, honesty and strategy will be truly impactful to Super Lawyers' long-term success!

Super Lawyers is perhaps most well-known for our lists, rating attorneys in each state using our patented selection process. But an important part of Super Lawyers is our editorial team, whose hard work regularly produces top-notch features on our selected attorneys, which are included in each issue of Super Lawyers Magazine. Earlier this year, we told you about two awards for which we were considered, and we're thrilled to announce that we've recently received two more.

The Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association (MMPA) is an organization comprised of publishing members, associates or vendors, freelancers, educational institutes and sponsors. MMPA held their 17th Annual Excellence Awards Gala on November 7, 2013 in Minneapolis, recognizing outstanding publishing achievements.
In a year that saw a record number of entries, Super Lawyers came away with two bronze awards in the highly competitive Best Profile category: one for "The Advocate" (from the 2012 Minnesota Super Lawyers Magazine) and the other for "Friending Ted Ullyot" (from the 2012 Super Lawyers Business Edition).
"It's a huge honor to receive these awards," said Ross Pfund, managing editor, Super Lawyers. "Our staff worked hard to make these stories happen, and we're happy with the end result and happy that the MMPA shared our enthusiasm."
The MMPA awards cap off an already noteworthy year for Super Lawyers journalism-earlier this year, "After Columbine," from the 2012 Colorado Super Lawyers Magazine, was awarded First Place in the Top of the Rockies Society of Professional Journalists contest in the Legal: General Reporting category. And "Friending Ted Ullyot," the same article honored by MMPA, was also a finalist for the LA Press Club's SoCal Journalism Award in the Magazine Personality Profile category, competing against other such high-profile publications as Hollywood Reporter, Playboy and Reason magazine.
Congratulations to the entire editorial team on an outstanding 2013!
It's that time of year again: The 2013 Super Lawyers Business Edition is here! This annual publication includes exceptional attorneys from over 8,500 firms who have mastered their skills in five different business-related practice areas: Business & Transactions; Construction, Real Estate and Environmental; Employment; Intellectual Property; and Business Litigation.
Distributed to over 50,000 in-house counsel and executives, as well as online at Business.SuperLawyers.com, the magazine serves as the go-to guide for general counsel in charge of making legal hiring decisions. The attorneys included are selected by Super Lawyers using a patented selection process, with no more than five percent of attorneys from each state making the list.
The 2013 Super Lawyers Business Edition contains:
- Top law firms in solo, small, medium and large firm sizes from each state within specific business-related practice groups
- Lists of law firms that include attorneys who were selected to Super Lawyers in 2012 or 2013 in business practice areas
- Spotlights on firms that receive outstanding results for their corporate clients
Within each edition, you'll also find compelling editorial features on general counsel who exemplify excellence in practice. This year we are honored to profile the general counsels of some of the world's most recognized brands, including Charles Schwab, Fannie Mae, Office Depot, Best Buy and CareerBuilder.
We talked with Charles Schwab's Carrie Dwyer, who rose through the ranks of a traditionally male-dominated field to become the "first filter" of Charles Schwab himself. Fannie Mae's Brad Lerman has an acute sense of fairness and big-picture approach that has made him a strong client-relationship lawyer. Office Depot's Elisa D. Garcia C. is working on what may be the biggest legal matter of her career: merging Office Depot and OfficeMax. Best Buy's Keith Nelsen discusses what it takes to lead a legal department during times of change and difficulty. And when Alex Green stepped into the GC role at CareerBuilder in 2004--following tenures in the legal departments of McDonald's Corporation and Household International--he wasn't even 40 years old.
The print publication will be available on November 18. For more information, or to view the 2013 Super Lawyers Business Edition digital edition, visit Business.SuperLawyers.com.
