Texas Lawyer Larry Macon Problem-Solves While He Runs

macon.jpgLarry Macon of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, who has been on our Texas Super Lawyers list every year since 2003, believes in the power of running. So he does it a lot. And by a lot, we mean A LOT.

He has run more than 800 marathons in his lifetime, and in 2011 he broke his own Guinness Book of World Records for most marathons run in a year with 113 -- he finished his last one of the year on his 67th birthday. His previous record was 106, which he completed in 2010.

Macon, who didn't start running until age 49, estimates he ran 2,938 miles last year, and went through 12 pairs of shoes (he's a New Balance guy). The question we asked him earlier in the week was simple: are you crazy?

"I just love to run," the affable San Antonio commercial litigator says with a quick laugh. "I don't go fast -- I just put one foot in front of the other. To me it's just fun."

And does all this running help him as a lawyer?

"Oh you bet it does. You start a race with a problem and by the end of a race you don't have a problem. It just clears the mind and lets you figure things out," he says.

He tries to keep the endeavours separate but he has been known to participate in conference calls while running. "I don't really mind; it's a good way of billing time."

Plus there are other benefits. The people. He finds a lot of them at races, and he wants to meet them all.

"It reminds me a lot of what I love about law, just being around all kinds of people," he says.

But clearly, after all that road work, his legs must be wrecked by now. Has he had some operations to keep those feet moving?

"None! I've never had any probelms whatsoever," he says. "I've just been blessed."

Now that just doesn't seem fair.
